It was a day that everyone remembered many years later not because of the town’s infamy but for the fact that the local chemist made a soaring trade in sun tan and camomile lotion.  Lily-white inhabitants with skin the texture of parchment suddenly enjoyed noticeable olive tans that were the preserve of Mediterraneans. The sun shined that day like it never had before.  For that one day only the townsfolk forgot that they lived in miserable weather &lt;st1:country-region st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;England&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:country-region&gt;. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 15px; "&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; "&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" &gt;&lt;b&gt;AMAH, my first play produced at Tara Arts Centre, London in June 1997&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; "&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" &gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Palatino; font-size: small; "&gt;Hilary:&lt;span&gt;            &lt;/span&gt;Can't play this season.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;My knee's buggered......……Bangkok will do the trick.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;An enticing pair of hands to massage the throbbing pain.....&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Come on you'll love it out there.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Leave your miserable old cow at home to chew the cud.&lt;span&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;When I was your age, I was all over the place.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;No one could find me.&lt;i&gt;&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;(&lt;i&gt;PAUSE)&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Get back in time to host the Rugby Sevens and drink the Aussie convicts under the table.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;--&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Zimbabwe will be playing for the first time next year!&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Beautiful country.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Will go back to rack and ruin like the rest of the bloody continent.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;i&gt;(PAUSE)&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;The world’s a bloody mess……&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Same old human foibles......&lt;i&gt;(Takes a swig).&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;i&gt;(PAUSE)&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Oh come on stay on for another.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;What's your wife got that I haven't got eh?&lt;i&gt;.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Marriage doesn't change anything.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;It doesn’t change a thing.&lt;span&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;All right lesson over.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Bugger off to your rationed carnal doom.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;i&gt;(Waves invisible friend off stage).&lt;/i&gt;&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Useless &lt;i&gt;(takes a another swig and extinguishes cigarette).&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Palatino; font-size: small; text-indent: -72pt; "&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" &gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:&amp;quot;Trebuchet MS&amp;quot;" &gt;Mamma used to say, “when you’re ugly, learn to sing.”&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;I never knew what she was talking about way back then but later I learned that if you are beautiful then people will forgive you for anything but if you are ugly, then you had better have something extra-or-di-na-ri-ly special that the world can take note of because then they will say, “he’s damn ugly but boy can he sing.”&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;Like Sammy Davis Junior, my idol.&lt;span&gt;  &lt;/span&gt;He was the ugliest black midget I ever saw, but man did he move and groove with the grace of a gazelle.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;Lillian Avon, the Zambian born 41 year old founder of the Bournemouth Literary Festival (&lt;a href="http://www.bournemouthliteraryfestival.co.uk"&gt;www.bournemouthliteraryfestival.co.uk&lt;/a&gt;) - a growing multi-cultural festival that fuses literature with performing arts - was raised and educated in England, Hong Kong and Zambia. She has worked as a PR Executive, Personal Assistant and Speech &amp;amp; Drama Teacher. In 1997 she established Nova Theatre and wrote and produced her first, AMAH, at the Tara Arts Centre in London. Her favourite writers and playwrights include: Toni Morrison, Samuel Beckett and Luigi Pirandello.
